Alsace to Paris: A Spring Journey Through Fairytales and Film
On Saturday, April 19, I woke up early in Italy with one goal: head north to France. I packed my bags, returned my rental car, and breezed through Milano Centrale without a hitch (a pleasant change from past experiences!). Then, onto the train—one of my favorite ways to travel. We carved through the Swiss Alps en route to Basel, the scenery unfolding like a movie. By 2:56 pm I was leaving Switzerland, and by 4:04 pm, I’d made it to Colmar, France.

My kind Airbnb host met me at the station and whisked me off to a cozy apartment nearby. He pointed out a bakery around the corner—Boulangerie Ozkan—which turned out to be so good I went back twice. After dropping my bags, I couldn’t wait. I set off on foot (as I always love to do) and walked the 15 minutes to Old Colmar.

It felt like walking into a fairytale: colorful timber-framed houses, cobblestone streets, spring flowers everywhere. I wandered, enchanted.
It was my first Easter away from family. I missed them. But the morning greeted me with sunshine and a blue sky dotted with hot air balloons. It lifted my spirits instantly. I’d been told everything would be closed, so I imagined a quiet town and peaceful stroll. Instead, Colmar was alive! Tourists filled the streets, laughter echoed through alleys, and the energy was infectious. I soaked it in while enjoying the best pretzel I’ve ever had (seriously). I walked along Little Venice, basking in the charming canals and flowers blooming on every bridge.

Monday, April 21 – Into the Vines
After another walk through Colmar’s magical streets, I headed to the tiny village of Niedermorschwihr. It’s nestled in the rolling hills of Alsace, surrounded by storybook vineyards. I visited Justin Boxler, a small family winery, and did a tasting that showcased everything I love about Alsace wine: fresh, mineral-driven, and full of personality.
Tuesday, April 22 – A Last Slow Stroll
This was my last full day in Colmar, and I spent it like the others—wandering, breathing in the floral air, admiring the architecture. No big plans, just soaking up the stillness before heading to the city.
Wednesday, April 23 – Bonjour, Paris
Train at 10 am, Paris by 12:30. I arrived at my Airbnb, dropped my things, and took off again on foot. After a relaxing lunch, I spent the afternoon at La Cinémathèque Française—where the Wes Anderson exhibit completely stole my heart. Every detail was so lovingly curated. If it ever makes it to Seattle, don’t miss it.

That evening, I met up with a friend at ERSO, and we shared what turned out to be my favorite dinner of the trip. Great food, laughter, and Paris at night—what more could I ask for?
Thursday, April 24 – Montmartre & Farewell
My final morning began with a perfect espresso from KB Coffee Roasters, followed by a long, quiet walk through the winding streets of Montmartre. With spring in full bloom and the soft light on the cobblestones, it was a dreamy end to the trip.

By afternoon, I was headed to the airport. Ready to fly home. Grateful for every moment—but especially ready to hug my family.
